Yes, I killed him. I killed him for money – and a woman. And I didnβt get the money and I didnβt get the woman. Pretty, isnβt it?
– Walter Neff, Double Indemnity (1944)
What Is Film Noir?
Film noir literally translates to black film or black cinema – a trend, style or genre (people argue over this to this day!) in American cinema, derived from gangster movies, developed mainly in the 1940s and the first half of the 1950s. Hollywood crime dramas were then imbued with darkness and pessimism never seen before, while emphasizing cynical motivations and attitudes. Film noir avoids a clear division between good and evil, shows often unexplained crimes and perversion, and avoids moralizing and happy endings. #movie #funfact
