Identity theft is not a joke, Jim! Millions of families suffer every year.
– Dwight Schrute
What Is Identity Theft?
Identity theft occurs when someone uses another person’s personal information and comes in many forms. In extreme cases, it can go far beyond simply destroying a victim’s credit rating and can lead to countless headaches, such as being denied employment on a routine background check or being wrongfully arrested. While it is virtually impossible to completely protect yourself from identity theft, awareness and vigilance are key to preventing the problem or fixing it if you do get hit.
How To Stay Protected?
- Do not mindlessly share your personal data.
- Think twice before sending scans of your documents.
- Report missing identification cards.
- Shred sensitive documents, both online and offline.
- Encrypt sensitive files on your computers, phones and flash drives.
- Clear the memory of devices you no longer use.
- Regularly review account transactions so you can spot suspicious activities or purchases.
- Check government databases and setup notifications if possible.
- If you feel like someone may be impersonating you, get a background check done.
How Far Can Identity Theft Go?
In 15th century Peter Warbeck took on the identity of Richard Shrewsbury, the Duke of York and rightful heir to the English Throne. Although the real Duke of York was believed to be murdered as a young boy, Perkin Warbeck spun the tale that he actually managed to escape the assassins and had been on the run ever since. With large support, including the aunt of the real Richard Shrewsbury, Warbeck invaded England. The invasion was unsuccessful and Warbeck was captured as an imposter and executed by King Henry VII.
