ASCII (a-skee) is an abbreviation for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. Developed in the 1960s as binary code used by electronic quipment to handle text using the English alphabet, numbers, and other common symbols. Its first commercial use was as a seven-bit teleprinter code promoted by Bell data services. If someone is talking about a file or document in ASCII, it means it is in plain text since ASCII does not have diacritics. Standard ASCII is still commonly used, particularly in computer software.
ASCII Art is a graphic design technique that typically uses computers for presentation and consists of pictures pieced together from the printable characters defined by the ASCII Standard. Invented because early printers often lacked graphics ability. Can be created with most text editors or image to ASCII converters. Nowadays the term is also loosely used to refer to text based visual art in general. #art
