The beached whale incident that took place in Florence, Oregon on November 12th, 1970 is often referred to as the “exploding whale” incident. A 45-foot-long sperm whale had washed ashore, and local officials were unsure how to dispose of the massive carcass. After consulting with experts, it was decided to use half a ton of dynamite to blow up the whale and scatter the remains. A large crowd of spectators gathered to watch the explosion, but things didn’t go as planned.

When the dynamite detonated, huge chunks of blubber rained down on nearby buildings and spectators, causing chaos and widespread disgust. The event gained national attention and became a cautionary tale of how not to dispose of a beached whale. Since then, authorities have developed more responsible methods for disposing of whale carcasses, such as burying them or towing them out to sea. #cursed #history
