Russia is the worldโs largest country, it covers nearly twice the territory of Canada, the second largest. It extends across the whole of northern Asia and the eastern third of Europe, spanning 11 time zones and incorporating a great range of environments and landforms.
Russia shares a border with 14 countries. No other country has as many borders. At their closest point, Russia and the US are a mere 4km (2.5mi) apart. Big Diomede Island is a part of Russia while Little Diomede Island is a part of the American state of Alaska.
It is home to Europeโs longest river, the Volga, at 3,690km (2,293 miles). It has more than 200 tributaries that, if counted with the main river, would add up to 357,000km (221,800 miles). Russia also is home to the worldโs deepest lake, Baikal, and the country recorded the worldโs lowest temperature outside the North and South poles.

Shiberia is part of Russia and the Siberian Husky is perhaps the best known of the medium-sized Russian dog breeds! The lineage dates back a whopping 4,000 years to the Chukchi people and their sled dogs.
There is a bronze sculpture of a dog with a shiny nose at Ploshchad Revolutsii metro station – it is shiny because it’s supposedly good luck to touch it. See more photos from metro at #puffinmeat.
That isn’t the only sculpture of a dog in Russia – there’s also a monument to Laika – “Soviet space dog” who became one of the first animals in space, and the first animal to orbit the Earth.
