Doge savoring "ลšwiฤ™conka" - Polish Easter Basket. Wow.

Easter is the only time of year when it is safe to put all your eggs in one basket.

In Poland Easter is one of the most important holidays, for many even more important than Christmas. It is also an event associated with a large number of traditions that have survived in various forms over the years. One of them is ลšwiฤ™conka (Shfen-tsonka) which means blessing of the Easter baskets. The basket is traditionally blessed on Holy Saturday and its contents are then eaten during Easter Breakfast on Sunday.

Polish Easter Basket includes:

  1. Bread – the basic food, which for Christians is the most important symbol, representing the body of Christ. It guarantees good fortune and prosperity.
  2. Pepper and salt – these are used to season eggs and other foods eaten at Easter breakfast. The black ground pepper in the holy sacrament refers to the bitter herbs that Jews used to add to charoset (a type of sauce). Salt, on the other hand, adds flavor to food and has purifying properties. It was once believed that it can ward off evil.
  3. Eggs – symbolize life and fertility. Hard boiled eggs are often dyed and decorated.
  4. Horseradish – symbolizes strength and vigor. It is supposed to bring good health and enhances the properties of other foods that are in the Easter feast.
  5. Sausage and other cold meats – a sign of the end of fasting. Symbolize good health and prosperity.
  6. Cake – appeared in baskets quite recently. It is a symbol of skill and perfection.
  7. Depending on the location, the basket may also contain cheese representing reconciliation between man and nature, butter symbolizing wealth, water as symbol of new life or other less traditional dishes and sweets that the family would like to have for Easter Breakfast.

The basket itself is usually made of wicker and is decorated with boxwood or peloid leaves. Although it is only a decoration, it still has its own symbolism – joy and hope. #funfact #food
