Hanging was once the primary method of execution and is still authorized in some places around the world. To determine the length of “drop” the prisoner may be weighted the day before execution, and a rehearsal is done using object of the same weight as the prisoner. This is very important because too long rope could mean decapitation, and too short – really long strangulation. The rope should have no spring or coiling and the knot be lubricated “to ensure smooth sliding action” (according to various official manuals!). Just before the execution, the prisoner is blindfolded and his legs and hands are secured. Execution takes place when a trap-door is opened and the prisoner falls through with the noose placed around the neck, causing rapid fracture-dislocation. Various things like strong neck muscles, very light prisoner or too short drop can result in slow asphyxiation. In such case the eyes may pop and poop accidents occur. #brutal #history
